At Jeavons Wood we want children to love maths and to see its beauty and relevance in the world. We want our children to be curious learners through noticing and wondering, looking for patterns and connections, and posing ‘What if?’ questions.
As a school, we have adopted a mastery approach in order to deliver the three aims of the National Curriculum, fluency, reasoning and problem solving. Underpinning the mastery approach is the belief that all children can learn and enjoy maths - we have high expectations for all. We believe in promoting sustained and deepening understanding by employing a variety of mastery strategies, with teaching for conceptual understanding at the heart of everything we do.
Our approach aims to provide all children with full access to the curriculum, enabling them to develop independence, confidence and competence – ‘mastery’ in mathematics in order to be independent mathematicians who are well equipped to apply their learning to the wider world. We support children to see mathematical structures with carefully chosen maths equipment and representations. Our intention is that children understand what they are doing rather than just learning to repeat routines without grasping what is happening. We value mathematical talk in our classrooms and use teaching strategies that encourage all children to engage in mathematical thinking.
Our main maths teaching is complimented by teaching fact fluency with understanding. Our aim is for children to have a secure grounding in number sense giving them the confidence and belief to tackle problems.
The teaching of maths at Jeavons Wood is grounded in research and teachers have the opportunity to regularly observe one another resulting in self-aware, reflective practice where everyone believes in getting better in order to help children understand concepts more deeply. The school maintains strong links with other schools in the Cam Academy Trust and with the Cambridge Maths hub to continue to learn and improve practice through collaboration.
We achieve this by providing a rich, diverse maths curriculum, underpinned by our school’s core values, enabling every member of our school community to have a ‘Lifetime Love for Learning’.
